ARTIST:  Danny Snell

STORY:
Each night Little Bilby looks up to greet the moon and each night the moon looks down and smiles. One night the moon doesn't smile. Little Bilby is concerned as the full moon has begun to disappear and goes on a search for the missing piece, asking everyone she meets for their help, including Sand-dragon, Hopping Mouse and Boobook Owl.  A large black ant accompanies Little Bilby on her quest through the rich coloured landscape of the desert.

Margaret Spurling "wanted to introduce young children to the interesting animals that live in the Australian desert; to show that Australia has many unique animals that are rarely mentioned; that the desert Is not a barren useless area, but contains an abundance of wildlife. The desert is also an especially magical place to be under the brilliant stars in the dark night sky."Working Title Press

ILLUSTRATIONS: Snell's acrylics play the deep-blue, star-spangled sky against the orange-gold texture of the desert, and his animals, all native to the Australian desert, have appealingly winsome expressions...BOOKLIST

ARTIST:  Kerry Argent
STORY:
Wombat loves the nativity play each Christmas and this year he tries out for every part, but he doesn't seem to be right for any of them. Emu knows the perfect role for wombat, and it ends up being the best nativity play ever.

All the animals are depicted simply but accurately in rich coloured watercolour and pencil." Queensland Department of Education and Training Library Services

SNIPPET:

How many authors of Australian picture books do you know?

If you are an Australian and you are considering buying or borrowing a picture book do you consider who wrote the book, was it made in Australia by an Australian? I am not necessarily talking about books about kangaroos, wombats and cockatoos just beautiful books written by Aussie authors.

Why are these books not promoted in our bookstores and libraries? Books with an Australian sense of humour, books with an Australian perspective with a footpath instead of a sidewalk and bush or scrub instead of a wood or a forest, books which support Australian writers and illustrators and proof readers and publishers, books with the colours of the Australian skies and landscapes.

Australia has a wealth of talented authors and illustrators who are creating wonderful picture books.
If you are unsure of Australian authors this site is a good place to start learning.
Here is a list of just some of the Australian authors and their picture books reviewed here:
